Governance of nature conservation (6 ECTS)
From juridical construct to ecological reality

Nature conservation is often thought to be the realm of otherworldly ecologists, reserved for the few that can recognise every insect and small plant. In practice, nothing is further from the truth. The majority of nature conservation is enforced via laws, formulated by politicians ultimately chosen by the people. Within this construct, the ‘ecological reality’ is quickly lost. Think of the legal concept of nature compensation, on which basis it may be possible to receive a license for a certain project which would damage part of a nature reserve, as long as this is compensated by creating a protected area elsewhere. While this may seem logical to lawyers, from an ecological perspective, ecosystems cannot simply be moved in such manner.  It is for this reason that we have to conclude that despite our best efforts, biodiversity is still declining. It is why different perspectives must be accounted for when we think of the conservation of nature, as many groups will be affected in different ways. But there are many ways to organise decision-making from a management perspective. Effective nature conservation requires an interdisciplinary approach to secure interests of both nature and society – and this is exactly what this course will teach you.

In this course, you will closely work in a multidisciplinary team of law-, ecology- and management students to create new horizons for conserving nature in the beautiful nature reserve of the Hatertse Vennen, 8 kilometres southwest of the campus. This area is both a natural gem and favoured recreational area, hosting hundreds of thousands of people every year. With increasing tourism development plans in the area, the question rises what this will entails for the natural value of the area. With your team, the help of your teachers and the support of relevant stakeholders, you are asked to come up with a realistic plan to conserve the natural beauty of the Hatertse Vennen, grounded in your respective disciplines.

Besides contributing your expert knowledge on this relevant and real-world topic, this course will greatly put your soft skills to the test. You will learn to work and communicate in an multidisciplinary team, ask pertinent questions to relevant stakeholders and present to difference audiences on multiple occasions. In addition, you will have plenty of freedom and autonomy to come up with innovative ideas and pursue your own interests. After completing the course you will possess both excellent knowledge about your own topic, as well as the skills to convincingly communicate to others from outside your discipline, while also better understanding them. You will also have a better understanding of the complexity of the major challenges facing our (global) society, the so-called wicked problems.

How to apply?
In this course, we are looking for skilled and enthusiastic students that are not afraid to learn. Since you’ll be working on a real-world case together with relevant stakeholders we only have six places available per discipline, i.e. 18 places in total. As such, we ask you to apply by writing a motivation letter (max 1 A4), describing what your motivation is to join this course and why you would be an asset to one of the multidisciplinary teams. Please note that much of the relevant literature for this course is in Dutch as we’re working with local law and stakeholders – we do not want to discourage those not speaking Dutch to apply, but do ask for motivation as to how you want to circumvent this issue. The deadline for your application is the 20^th of May and we will communicate the result of our selection procedure to all students on the 31^th of May.

Logistics
The course will run from the first week of September until half November, every Wednesday morning. Before the course starts there will be a kick-off meeting held mid-June during which we will meet each other, as well as several of the stakeholders. Additional information about the case you will be working on will also be provided.

Who are we?
The course will be taught by a team of passionate teachers, all sharing a strong conviction that many of today’s challenges can only be solved by crossing the boundaries of our disciplines. Simon Tans is an experienced law teacher who has ample experience with interdisciplinary courses and has won multiple awards for his clear and infectious teaching practice. Annika Boh is coordinator of talent programs at the law faculty. She has experience with interdisciplinary projects and provides and develops skills training that is useful in practice. Juliette Alenda-Demoutiez is a political economist working on varied transdisciplinary projects touching upon different types of transformations for sustainability, in research as well as in education. Specifically, she enjoys discussing and providing various ways to view the world around us. Joseline Houwman is project manager of Healthy Landscape, the Radboud-wide platform for biodiversity restoration. In addition to familiarity with interdisciplinary projects, she also has a lot of experience with science communication, including as co-founder of the Climate Help Desk. Finally, Constant Swinkels is a young ecologist fascinated by everything nature related who has worked a lifetime on conveying this fascination to others (he started giving excursions to peers when he was about 12 years old).

Klaar voor een uitdaging? We nodigen je van harte uit voor onze nieuwe interdisciplinaire cursus over natuurbescherming in het overbevolkte Nederland!

Natuurbescherming wordt vaak beschouwd als het domein van wereldvreemde ecologen, voorbehouden aan de weinigen die elk insect en elke kleine plant kunnen herkennen. In de praktijk is niets minder waar. Het merendeel van de natuurbescherming wordt afgedwongen via wetten, bedacht door politici die uiteindelijk door het volk worden gekozen. Binnen dit kader gaat de 'ecologische realiteit' snel verloren. Een voorbeeld is het juridische concept van natuurcompensatie, op basis waarvan het mogelijk is om een vergunning te krijgen voor een bepaald project dat (een deel van) een natuurgebied zou schaden, zolang als dit wordt gecompenseerd door het creëren van natuur elders. Hoewel dit logisch lijkt voor juristen, kunnen ecosystemen vanuit ecologisch perspectief niet simpelweg worden verplaatst. We moeten concluderen dat ondanks onze juridische kaders, biodiversiteit nog steeds afneemt. Daarom moeten verschillende perspectieven mee worden genomen in natuurbescherming, aangezien veel groepen op verschillende manieren zullen worden beïnvloed. Vanuit een managementperspectief zijn er echter vele manieren om besluitvorming te organiseren. Effectieve natuurbescherming vereist een interdisciplinaire aanpak om de belangen van zowel natuur als samenleving veilig te stellen - en dat is precies wat deze cursus je zal leren.

In deze cursus werk je nauw samen in een multidisciplinair team van rechten-, ecologie- en managementstudenten om nieuwe perspectieven te creëren voor het behoud van de natuur in het prachtige natuurgebied de Hatertse Vennen, 8 kilometer ten zuidwesten van de campus. Dit gebied is zowel een natuurlijke parel als een geliefd recreatiegebied, waar jaarlijks honderdduizenden mensen naartoe komen. Met de toenemende plannen voor toeristische ontwikkeling in het gebied komt de vraag op wat dit betekent voor de natuurlijke waarde van het gebied. Met jouw team, de hulp van je docenten en de steun van relevante belanghebbenden, wordt je gevraagd om een realistisch plan te bedenken om de natuurlijke schoonheid van de Hatertse Vennen te behouden, gebaseerd op jullie respectievelijke disciplines.

Naast het bijdragen van jouw expertise aan dit vraagstuk, stelt deze cursus ‘soft skills’ op de proef. Je leert werken en communiceren in een multidisciplinair team, relevante vragen stellen aan belanghebbenden en presenteren aan verschillende doelgroepen tijdens meerdere gelegenheden. Bovendien krijg je veel vrijheid en autonomie om met innovatieve ideeën te komen en je eigen interesses na te streven. Na het voltooien van de cursus bezit je niet alleen uitstekende kennis over jouw eigen onderwerp, maar ook de vaardigheden om overtuigend te communiceren met anderen buiten jouw discipline, terwijl je ook meer besef hebt voor hun standpunten. Je hebt ook een beter begrip van de complexiteit van de belangrijkste uitdagingen waarmee onze (wereldwijde) samenleving wordt geconfronteerd, de zogenaamde 'wicked problems'.

Hoe te solliciteren?

In deze cursus zijn we op zoek naar bekwame en enthousiaste studenten die niet bang zijn om te leren. Omdat je samenwerkt aan een echte casus met relevante belanghebbenden, hebben we slechts zes plaatsen beschikbaar per discipline, oftewel 18 plaatsen in totaal. Daarom vragen we je om een motivatiebrief te schrijven (max 1 A4), waarin je beschrijft wat je motivatie is om deel te nemen aan deze cursus en waarom je een aanwinst zou zijn voor een van de multidisciplinaire teams. Wie zijn wij?

De cursus wordt gegeven door een team van gepassioneerde docenten, die allemaal de sterke overtuiging delen dat veel van de uitdagingen van vandaag de dag alleen kunnen worden opgelost door de grenzen van onze disciplines te overschrijden. Simon Tans is een getalenteerde juridisch docent die ruime ervaring heeft met interdisciplinaire cursussen en meerdere prijzen heeft gewonnen voor zijn heldere en aanstekelijke onderwijspraktijk. Annika Boh is coördinator van talentenprogramma’s bij de rechtenfaculteit. Zij heeft onder andere ervaring met interdisciplinaire projecten en geeft en ontwikkelt vaardighedentrainingen die in de praktijk goed van pas komen. Juliette Alenda-Demoutiez is een politiek econoom die werkt aan gevarieerde transdisciplinaire projecten die verschillende soorten transformaties voor duurzaamheid betreffen, zowel in onderzoek als in onderwijs. Specifiek geniet ze ervan om te discussiëren en verschillende manieren te bieden om de wereld om ons heen te bekijken. Joseline Houwman is projectmanager van Healthy Landscape, het Radboud-brede platform voor biodiversiteitsherstel. Naast ervaring met interdisciplinaire projecten heeft ze ook veel ervaring met wetenschapscommunicatie, o.a. als mede-oprichter van de KlimaatHelpdesk. Ten slotte is Constant Swinkels een jonge ecoloog die gefascineerd is door alles wat met de natuur te maken heeft en een leven lang heeft gewerkt aan het overbrengen van deze fascinatie op anderen (hij begon excursies te geven aan leeftijdsgenoten toen hij ongeveer 12 jaar oud was).

We kijken er erg naar uit om je nauw te begeleiden bij je eerste stappen in de complexe wirwar van wicked problems en interdisciplinaire benaderingen!
