On the 25^th of April in the year 1985 BeeVee was found at Doornroosje. At the 29^th of April the bylaws of BeeVee were established. The founding of BeeVee became a fact. But what happened before all this?
It all started in 1984. Every two months there were meetings with biology students to discuss practical matters concerning the study. The book sale at that time was managed by the Stichting Nijmeegse Biologen (foundation biologists of Nijmegen). The money that was earned with this sale disappeared into the bank account of this vague foundation that was being managed by one person. This wasn’t the right way to go. It concerned money of all biology students. Out of this, the idea arose to set up an association for biology students. 

Six second-year students got together to found this association for biology students. These students were Carlo Buise, Luca van Duren, Ingrid Groot- Zwaaftink, Bart Rijs, Marco Thörig and Ad Ragas. Opportunism was the driving force of this group to make reality of all the ideas they had. Right from the start, the six students ran into two problems. The first was a money issue. Where could they get money from to found the association? The second problem was the Stichting Nijmeegse Biologen. They managed the book sale. Aside from that, they also organized movie nights for the students. The competition was on!
To inform everyone of the new association there was a party held in Doornroosje at the 22^nd of November 1984. The name of the party was: “Biologists of all times united”. A lot of people showed up, so most of the biology students knew of the plan to found the association. After this party approximately 40 students stood up to help the upcoming association. With these 40 people the temporary commissions (VACs) were established. There were commissions that took care of dictations, books, a MOTjE (associations magazine), excursions and lectures, movies and parties and a canteen. The canteen must be set up, because the regular canteen was forbidden for students. A boardroom was designed by the faculty that must be shared with V.C.M.W. Sigma (study association for Molecular Sciences). This boardroom was located at the Universal Laboratory. Nowadays this building doesn’t exist anymore. The founding students waited a year to get the boardroom. An association room was arranged much faster. This room was only for BeeVee and its members. The association room was located in the Linneaus building. To see how others managed the foundation of an association, the students went to talk to GSV Excalibur (association for History students) and MFV (Medical Faculty Association). They learned a lot from these conversations.

The two problems that were acknowledged in the beginning were solved quickly. The SNUF (Foundation University Fund Nijmegen) gave a fund in the form of a loan. Beside that the publishing of dictates (written notes of lectures) was another source of income. The Stichting Nijmeegse Biologen fell of the radar pretty quickly.

After all, six commissions were established. Every commission had a representative in the board.  There was also a daily board, consisting of four people: Ad Ragas (chairman), Carlo Buise (Treasurer), Marian Weterman (1^st secretary) and Bart Rijs (2^nd secretary). This led to a board consisting of ten members.

All that was left to do was to come up with a name and a logo. After a meeting of four hours the name BeeVee was chosen. The logo became a mouse with a test tube in its paws.

A date was chosen for a general meeting of members. This was April 25^th 1985. The meeting was set to officially found the association. After the meeting there was another party to celebrate the birth of BeeVee.

In the first year the association held a book sale and an introduction week. The members kept on coming. After lots of movie nights there was the celebration of 1^st anniversary of BeeVee. After this year, a new board was chosen.

The Huygens building was established in 2006. In the beginning the board of the faculty didn’t mind the boards of the study associations. After long negotiations, the boards of the study associations got two shared boardrooms, but these were too far away from the student canteens (North- and South canteen) and the lecture halls. Olympus (the umbrella association of beta student associations) discussed with the faculty board once again to get rooms closer to the canteens. Eventually the study associations got two rooms right above the canteens. This is the location of the current board rooms. After the installation of telephone and internet connections the boards could all move in. This happened in the summer of 2006.

In all these years there followed many boards who on their turn changed small things of the association. Multiple functions arose in the board and some changed their name. The House Rules were established and these were updated during the years. The association also gained numerous of new committees. More members came up until the 600^th and many lustra were celebrated.

Some things didn’t change. The movie nights, introduction weeks and parties are still a part of BeeVee. There is still an associations magazine called the ‘MOTjE’ and book sales are managed by the board. There is a meeting between the chairmen of the committees and the board every two weeks and there is still integration with the other associations in Nijmegen.

Many BeeVee members still carry a big smile during the activities. Hopefully every graduated BeeVee member will think of their study time with the same smile. BeeVee forever!

Op 25 april 1985 is BeeVee opgericht in Roosje. Op 29 april werden de Statuten der BeeVee vastgesteld. De oprichting van BeeVee was een feit. Maar wat ging daar aan vooraf?

Het begon allemaal in 1984. Om de twee maanden waren er gesprekken tussen biologiestudenten onderling om praktische zaken rond de studie te bespreken. De boekenverkoop werd in die tijd door de Stichting Nijmeegse Biologen geregeld. Het geld dat daarmee werd verdiend verdween op een spaarrekening van deze vage stichting die door één persoon werd gerund. Dat kon niet de bedoeling zijn. Het ging immers om geld van biologiestudenten. Hieruit werd het idee geboren om een vereniging op te richten voor en door biologiestudenten.

Zes tweedejaars biologiestudenten staken de hoofden bij elkaar om een studievereniging voor biologiestudenten op te richten. Deze zes studenten waren Carlo Buise, Luca van Duren, Ingrid Groot- Zwaaftink, Bart Rijs, Marco Thörig en Ad Ragas. Opportunisme was de drijfkracht van deze groep om ideeën in werkelijkheid om te toveren. Deze zes studenten liepen in het begin meteen tegen twee problemen aan. Het eerste probleem waren de kosten voor het oprichten van een vereniging. Waar haal je het geld vandaan? Het tweede probleem was de Stichting Nijmeegse Biologen. Zij hadden de boekenverkoop in handen. Daarnaast organiseerden zij ook nog films voor biologiestudenten. De concurrentie moest dus worden aangegaan met de Stichting.

Om iedereen op de hoogte te stellen van het idee om een vereniging op te richten werd er op 22 november 1984 een groot feest in Roosje georganiseerd. Dit feest had de naam: “Biologen der aller jaren, verenigt U!” Hier kwamen vele mensen op af, waardoor het idee om een vereniging op te richten al goed bekend was bij de biologiestudenten. Na dit feest zijn er ongeveer 40 studenten opgestaan om iets te doen voor de aankomende vereniging. Met behulp van deze 40 mensen werden Voorlopige Activiteiten Commissies (VACs) opgericht. Zo kwamen er VACs die zich ontfermden over dictaten, boeken, een MOTjE, excursies en lezingen, films en feesten en een kantine. Een kantine moest geregeld worden vanwege het feit dat de gewone kantine verboden terrein was voor studenten. Vanuit de faculteit werd er een ruimte aangewezen die samen met V.C.M.W. Sigma (studievereniging van Molecular Sciences) gedeeld moest worden. Deze was te vinden in het Universeel Laboratorium. Dit gebouw is inmiddels gesloopt. Hier is een jaar op gewacht. Een verenigingskamer was wel snel een feit. Deze was van BeeVee alleen. Deze bevond zich in het huidige Linneausgebouw. Ook werden er gesprekken gevoerd met GSV Excalibur (Geschiedenis Studenten Vereniging Excalibur) en MFV (Medische Faculteits Vereniging), om te kijken hoe zij dingen aanpakten. Van deze verenigingen werd veel geleerd.

De twee problemen waar in het begin tegenaan gelopen werd, waren snel opgelost. Het SNUF (Stichting Nijmeegs Universiteitsfonds) kende subsidies toe in de vorm van een lening. Daarnaast leverde het uitgeven van dictaten (uitgeschreven aantekeningen van colleges die in veelvoud werden gekopieerd) ook geld op. Van de Stichting Nijmeegse Biologen werd al snel niets meer vernomen. 

Er kwamen uiteindelijk zes commissies, die allen een bestuursvertegenwoordiger hadden. Deze vertegenwoordiger werd door de commissie zelf gekozen. Daarnaast kwam er een dagelijks bestuur, bestaande uit vier personen: Ad Ragas (voorzitter), Carlo Buise (Penningmeester), Marian Weterman (1^e secretaris) en Bart Rijs (2^e secretaris). Dit leidde tot een algemeen bestuur van tien personen.

Tot slot restte er nog een naam voor de vereniging en een logo. Tijdens een erg moeizame vergadering met ongeveer dertig man werd na vier uur de naam BeeVee gekozen en werd het logo een muisje met een reageerbuis.

Er werd een datum gekozen voor de algemene ledenvergadering, dit werd 25 april 1985. Deze vergadering was er om de vereniging officieel op te richten. Na deze vergadering vond er een feest plaats, om het heugelijke feit te vieren.

In het eerste jaar vond er een boekenverkoop en introductie plaats, kwam er een 100^e lid, kwam er een 200^e lid, zijn er vele filmavonden georganiseerd en was er uiteindelijk het éénjarig bestaan van de vereniging. Na dit eerste jaar kwam er een nieuw bestuur.

In 2006 is het huidige Huygensgebouw gebouwd. In eerste instantie had het faculteitsbestuur geen rekening gehouden met de verenigingsbesturen. Na lang onderhandelen hebben de verenigingen toch twee verenigingskamers gekregen, maar deze lagen ver verwijderd van de studentenkantines (Noord- en Zuidkantine) en collegezalen. Olympus (koepelvereniging bèta-studieverenigingen) is verder gaan onderhandelen om kamers in de buurt van de kantines te krijgen. Uiteindelijk zijn de ruimtes boven de studentenkantines aangewezen. Dit is de locatie waar de bestuurskamers zich op dit moment nog steeds bevinden. Nadat er een telefoon- en internetverbinding in deze kamers was aangelegd, konden de zes besturen van de bèta-studieverenigingen en het Olympusbestuur hier gaan werken. Na de zomervakantie van 2006 zijn de bestuurskamers in gebruik genomen.

Na deze jaren volgden er nog vele besturen die elke keer weer iets veranderden / verbeterden in de vereniging. Meerdere functies kwamen in het bestuur of functies kregen een andere naam. Een Huishoudelijk Reglement werd opgesteld en dit werd door de jaren heen weer verbeterd. In de loop der tijd werden nieuwe commissies opgericht waardoor er nu veertien zijn in plaats van zes. Deze commissies worden nog steeds VACs genoemd, maar de V staat niet meer voor Voorlopige maar voor Vaste. Het 300^e, 400^e, 500^e en 600^e lid werd binnen de vereniging verwelkomd. En natuurlijk werden er meerdere lustra gevierd.

Maar er zijn ook vele dingen hetzelfde gebleven. Filmavonden, introducties en feesten vinden nog steeds plaats. Er is nog steeds een MOTjE en de boeken worden nog steeds door de vereniging verkocht. Er vindt nog steeds overleg plaats tussen de voorzitters van commissies en het bestuur en ook vindt er nog steeds overleg plaats tussen de verschillende studieverenigingen van Nijmegen en daarbuiten.

Op vele BeeVee-leden staat nog steeds een glimlach op het gezicht tijdens de vele activiteiten. Hopelijk kijkt elk afgestudeerd BeeVee-lid nog steeds terug met een glimlach naar zijn of haar BeeVee-periode.
